Saudi Arabia to standardize charging ports for smartphones and electronic devices to USB Type-C Release Time:2023-08-25

On August 4, 2023, Saudi Arabia issued the TBT notification G/TBT/N/SAU/1297 through the WTO, and the Board of Directors of the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) passed a draft decision on unifying the types of chargers for smartphones and electronic devices . According to the decision, from January 1, 2025, USB Type-C will be the only standardized connector.

The decision will be made in two stages, with the following minimum requirements:

1) The first phase will begin on January 1, 2025, mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, e-readers, portable video game devices, headsets, earphones, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, portable Devices such as speakers and wireless routers must use the USB Type-C charging interface uniformly;

2) The second phase will start on April 1, 2026, and the unified USB-Type C charging port requirements will be extended to laptops to ensure their compatibility with standardized charging infrastructure. At that time, all kinds of devices, including laptops, will use USB-Type C as the interface.


Most of the above-mentioned affected electronic devices are controlled by the SASO IECEE Recognition Certificate (SIRC), and the rest of the products must also apply for the mandatory Product Conformity Certificate (P-CoC) and Shipping Certificate (S- CoC ).


According to the technical and management requirements stipulated in this regulation and related standards, AGC hereby reminds all suppliers who plan to export to the Saudi Arabian market that they must standardize the charging port type of electronic devices to USB Type-C from 2025 to ensure that the devices can be successfully obtained. The access certificate has been successfully sold to the Saudi market.
